Motors Flashcards
What is the action of a D.C. motor?
A D.C. motor converts electrical energy into rotational mechanical energy using the motor effect.
Key Steps(DC)
Current flows through a rectangular coil placed in a magnetic field.
According to Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule, each side of the coil experiences a force in opposite directions.
These forces create a turning effect (torque) causing the coil to rotate.
A split-ring commutator reverses the direction of the current every half turn, ensuring continuous rotation in the same direction.
What is the action of an A.C. generator?
An A.C. generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by electromagnetic induction.
Key Steps (AC)
A coil is rotated in a magnetic field.
As it spins, the coil cuts through magnetic field lines, inducing a current.
The direction of the current changes every half turn, producing alternating current (A.C.).
Slip rings and carbon brushes allow the current to flow to an external circuit without reversing connections.
