Electricity in the Home Flashcards
Why are domestic appliances connected in parallel?
So each appliance gets full voltage from the supply.
Allows appliances to work independently—one can be turned off without affecting others.
Ensures equal voltage but different current as needed.
What is the purpose of a fuse, circuit breaker, and earth wire?
Fuse: Melts and breaks the circuit if current is too high—prevents fire or damage.
Circuit Breaker: Automatically switches off the circuit during a fault—reusable safety device.
Earth Wire: Directs stray current safely into the ground if the appliance casing becomes live—prevents electric shock.
📌 Note: Fuses are always placed in the live wire.
How do you choose the right fuse or circuit breaker for an appliance?
Select a fuse with a current rating just above the appliance’s normal operating current.
🔹 Example: For a device drawing 3A, use a 5A fuse.
What are the risks of using appliances with incorrect or fluctuating voltages?
Overvoltage: Can damage circuits or cause overheating and fire.
Undervoltage: Causes malfunction, poor performance, or failure to operate.
Fluctuations: Lead to wear and tear on motors and electronics over time.
