conductors and insulators Flashcards
What is a conductor
A conductor is a material that allows electric charge (electrons) to flow through it easily.
What is an insulator
An insulator is a material that does not allow electric charge to flow through it easily.
What are key properties of conductors
Contain free electrons that move easily.
Allow electric current to pass.
Can be charged and discharged quickly.
What are key properties of insulators
Electrons are tightly bound to atoms.
Do not conduct electricity.
Can hold static charge (used in charging by friction)
Give examples of conductors
Metals: Copper, Aluminium, Silver
Graphite (a form of carbon)
Salt water (electrolytes)
Give examples of insulators.
Rubber, Plastic, Wood, Glass, Air
Polythene and Perspex
How are materials classified as conductors or insulators?
Based on their ability to conduct electricity:
Good conduction ➝ Conductor
Poor/no conduction ➝ Insulator
