List Ekman’s Seven Universal Emotions
- Happiness
- Sadness
- Fear
- Disgust
- Surprise

motivation
the purpose behind our actions
extrinsic motivation
external rewards, eg money, praise, not being punished
intrinsic motivation
motivation from within oneself, eg pure interest
instincts
innate, fixed patterns of behavior in response to stimuli
instinct theory
people are driven to do certain behaviors based on evolutionarily programmed instincts
arousal
the psychological and physiological state of being awake and reactive to stimuli
arousal theory
people perform actions in order to maintain an optimal level of arousal
Yerkes-Dodson law
performance is worst at extremely high and low levels of arousal and optimal at some intermediate level
drive
an internal state of tension
drive reduction theory
motivation is based on the goal of eliminating uncomfortable states and return to homeostasis
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
- physiological
- safety/security
- love/belonging
- esteem
- self-actualization
name the three theories of emotion
James-Lange, Cannon-Bard, Schachter-Singer
James-Lange theory of emotion
a stimulus results in physiological arousal, which leads to a secondary response in which the emotion is labeled (I must be angry because my skin is hot and my blood pressure is high) - proven false with pts with spinal cord injuries
Cannon-Bard theory of emotion
physiological arousal and conscious emotion lead to action - I am afraid because I see a snake and my heart is racing… let me out of here!
