Q

Coaches and players must be careful not to place too much emphasis on extrinsic rewards, why?

A
  • Over-use may lead to loss in value or incentive.
  • If there is always a trophy this may become the norm rather than the exception (players may compete for the award and not the true value).
  • Could place pressure on performers to get the reward + could lead to cheating (gamesmanship).
  • Can undermine the intrinsic reasons for competing.
