A drive to succeed
What are the two types of motivation?
Intrinsic and extrinsic
Intrinsic motivation
- external stimuli and internal mechanism that drive and direct behaviour
- could be feeling of pride and satisfaction
Extrinsic motivation
- outside source E.g. coaches and crowds
- can undermine value of game leading to cheating (win at all costs ethic)
Two types of rewards
Tangible and intangible
Tangible rewards
Physical and can be touched
- medals or certificates
Intangible rewards
Non-physical + encouragement/praise
- beating PB and applause
Considerations a coach must consider when rewarding a beginner
Offering rewards and incentives early on
Make activities fun and enjoyable
Break down skill
Point out role models for aspiration

Pointing out health benefits
Make performer responsible for their own successes
Attribute success internally
Use feedback to inspire and correct errors
