Attribution Theory Flashcards
Weiner 1974
Locus of causality (internal external)
Stability of dimension (stable unstable)
Attribute
Looks at reasons to explain what has happened
Locus of causality
External or internal
Whether its within the control of the performer or out of the performers control
The stability dimension
Stable or unstable
Unstable = didnt try hard enough/put in enough effort
Stable = opponents are a good team and still a good team later on in season
Attribution can be used to promote task persistence by :
Self serving bias
Learned helplessness
Attribution retaining
Self-serving bias
Promotes self-esteem
Blame losing on ref or bad luck not player
Learned helplessness
When a performer blames losing on internal and stable reasons such as ability
Can become general so if bad at one racket sport they may think they are bad at all racket sports
Can be overcome by attribution retraining
Attribution retraining
Change perception and belief of sportsperson by changing reasons for failure
Refer to weiner model
External changeable reasons for failure such as luck
Coach could provide motivation via reinforcement
