Confidence in Sport (Vealey) Flashcards
Two types of confidence
Trait and state
Trait confidence
How well an athlete rates their ability to perform across a wide range of sports
- consistent levels of confidence shown in most situations
- when player is happy to take part and anxiety is low
State confidence
How well an athlete rates their ability at a particular moment
- refers to specific situation e.g. taking penalty
- temporary and can vary on depending on the interaction of experience and personality
Vealey model of sports confidence
Looks at the influence of trait confidence, state confidence, the situation and the competitive orientation of the performer
Outcome or result
- evaluated by player
- makes judgement as how well they did taking into account the objective situation
- result of judgement may lead to improved confidence in future
- player develops a competitive orientation = player prepared to compete and try harder = improved approach behaviour
Objective sporting situation
When trait and state confidence is combined to create confidence in an objective sporting situation
- confidence gained in one area of sport could be used to improve confidence in a different sporting activity
- if it is a skill used successfully in the past, both state and trait confidence would be high
- also looks at the conditions the skill was performed in to see whether pressure was high (big or small crowd audience)
Trait confidence + competitiveness
Judgement of athlete is called subjective outcome and if judgement is good, then trait confidence and competitive orientation increase
HOWEVER
If outcome is bad, then both trait confidence and competitive orientation decrease
