Motivation Flashcards
Motivation
The drive to succeed
Intrinsic motivation
from within. The satisfaction of successfully completing a task,
pride, self satisfaction
Extrinsic motivation
from an outside source. Praise from the coach, other players, scouts
Tangible motivation
physical can be touched, e.g. trophies, certificates
Intangible motivation
non-physical, e.g. praise, concern, encouragement
Extrinsic motives
Extrinsic rewards may create pressure on players to achieve and if they don’t get the reward, motivation can be lost. The same pressure may also promote cheating
Intrinsic motives
Intrinsic rewards are more effective, stronger and long lasting, they give more satisfaction and pride and a sense of control
What methods could be used by coaches to motivate performers?
■ Rewards, praise and positive reinforcement ■ Make the task fun/enjoyable ■ Make sure the performer can succeed ■ Point out the benefits of exercise ■ Negative reinforcement (for experts) ■ Set attainable goals ■ Point out role models ■ Break the task down ■ Attribute success internally
How a coach could try to combine and maintain both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
- offering rewards and incentives early on
- making the activity fun and enjoyable
- pointing out the health benefits
- pointing out role models to aspire to
- making performers feel responsible for their success
- setting achievable targets for performers
- using feedback to inspire and correct errors
advantages of using intrinsic motivation
More permanent, sustains effort, gives self-satisfaction
disadvantages of using extrinsic motivation
players may cheat to get reward. May lose motivation if the reward can’t be achieved. Undermines intrinsic motivation – player may compete just for the reward, not for the values of the game
