Arousal Flashcards
Arousal
An energised state and readiness to perform
Drive theory
As arousal levels rise an athlete’s performance improves in a linear fashion
Catastrophe theory
Athletes experience a rise in arousal which improves performance to a certain maximal point before dropping off leading to a deterioration in performance.
Inverted U theory
Athletes experience a rise in arousal levels which improves performance to a max point before arousal levels begin to fade leading to a worsening of performance
Attentional narrowing
Mental blocking out of environmental factors as a result of over arousal
Social loafing
When an individuals performance is worse in a group/team sport
Why do optimal arousal zones vary
The nature of the sport being played (eg. Golfer will not need as much arousal as a rugby player)
Personality of the athlete (eg. Introverts and extroverts)
Optimal zone of functioning
A state of complete control, ease of performance, lack of anxiety in a sporting performance
Under arousal characteristics
Lack of focus/concentration
Poor/slow decision making
Social loafing
Over arousal characteristics
Lack of focus/concentration
Recklessness
Poor decision making
Attentional narrowing
