What’s the most commonly prescribed med for motion sickness?
Scopolamine (Transderm Scop)
Howz Scopolamine (Transderm Scop) used?
Applied behind ear, 4-6 hrs prior to need
Last 3 days
Don’t cut patch, alternate ears and wash hands afterwards
List antihistamines used in motion sickness
Cyclizine (Marezine)
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
Dimenhydrinate (Dramamine)
Meclizine (Bonine)
In what grp of pts is Promethazine (rx only) CI? Why?
Children, esp < 2 yrs
Bcuz of risk of respiratory depression
What’s the similarity btw scopolamine (Transderm Scop) and all antihistamines used in motion sickness?
All have anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, confusion - in elderly, stinging eyes - if touch eyes after handling patch)
How soon b4 travel should oral meds be taken?
30-60 mins prior
What should pts be told may occur after they used motion sickness meds?
They may feel tired
What should be avoided with Transderm Scop use?
Alcohol
Where is Transderm Scop applied?
Behind ears (press for 30sec)
How soon b4 travel should Transderm Scop be applied?
At least 4 hrs before,
What should be done immediately after applying Transderm Scop patch?
Wash hands thoroughly
