Motion Flashcards
What is the formula for speed?
Speed= Distance/ Time
What is used to measure distance?
Tape measure, trundle wheel
What is used to measure time?
Stopwatch
What is velocity?
Speed in a specific/ one direction.
What is speed?
The rate at which an object changes its position in space.
What is distance?
A measure of how far something moves through space.
What is the formula for acceleration?
Acceleration= V-U/ T
where v= final velocity
u= intial velocity
What is the formula for velocity?
V= v+u/2

Ticker tape: Define the object’s motion.
S . . . . . . . . . . . . . F
Getting slower/ decelerating
How do you calculate the speed of an object using a distance- time graph?
Speed= Rise/ Run
What is circular motion? Give an example.
Movement of an object in a circle, e.g. Earth orbiting the sun.
The further falling objects fall, the …….. they fall.
quicker
Why do falling objects accelerate?
Due to Earth’s gravity pull.
What is the acceleration due to gravity on Earth?
- 8m/second squared
i. e. for every second the object falls, its speed increases by 9.8m/sec.
Why do objects fall more slowly on the moon?
Because there is less gravity.
What is gravity?
Gravity is a force that attracts a body to the centre of the Earth, or any other physical body having mass.
What is Newton’s First Law of Motion?
An object at rest will remain at rest unless an unbalanced force acts upon it. An object in motion will continue in motion with the same speed and direction unless an unbalanced force acts upon it. LAW OF INERTIA.
What is Newton’s Second Law of Motion?
Force= Mass x Acceleration (F=Ma)
If the mass of an object s kept constant, then its acceleration is directly related to the forces put on it, e.g. if you double the force you double the rate of acceleration.
What is Newton’s Third Law of Motion?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Forces always come in pairs. If one force is larger than the other, the object will move in the direction of the larger force.
Falling objects do not continue to fall faster once they reach a velocity of aprprox. 200km/ h. Why is this?
The fall is slowed by the increasing air resistance.
What is friction?
Friction is a force that acts in the opposite direction of motion.
