Forces in Action Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push, pull or twist applied to an object.
What is weight?
Weight is due to the force of gravity acting on an object.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
What is weight measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is mass measured in?
kilograms (kg)
What are non- contact forces? Give examples.
Forces that do not touch the object they move, e.g. gravity, electrical and magnetic forces.
What is friction, and what type of force is it?
Friction is the force which slows movement and it is a contact force.
What is acceleration?
When an object increases speed/ gets quicker in its motion.
What is pressure?
The amount of force applied to a given area.
What is pressure measured in?
Pascals (Pa)
1000 Pascals = 1 Kilopascals (KPa)
What is the formula for pressure?
Pressure= Force/ Area
What is density?
The measure of the heaviness of a substance.
What is the formula for density and what is density measured in?
Density = Mass/ Volume
It is measure in g/ mL
If an object has a greater density, then it will …….. when placed in water.
sink
What is buoyancy?
When water pushes up on objects placed in it.
What provides more buoyancy, salt or fresh water?
Salt water
What is the device used to measure the density and therefore their buoyancy called?
Hydrometer
What is cohesion?
Attraction between the same type of particle.
What is adhesion?
The attraction between different types of particles.
What are two things levers are used for?
1) Force magnifiers- you can lift a heavy object using a smaller force.
2) Movement magnifiers- when the effort is moved through a small distance the load is lifted a large distance
What are ramps and inclined planes used for?
Makes it easy to lift a heavy load.
What are three things gear can do?
1) Change the direction of rotation.
2) Speed magnifier (e.g. a large effort cog turning a small load cog)
3) A force magnifier (a small effort cof turning a large load cog)
What are pulleys used for?
To change the direction of a force.
