Astronomy/ The Universe Flashcards
What is the Big Bang Theory? Explain.
A thoery which explains how the Universe was formed.
A region of energy exploded outward. Matter was later formed from this energy. Matter condensed into starts because of gravity.
When light from distant stars are moving away from Earth, what does it produce?
A ‘red shift’ in the light coming from the stars.
What did Edward Hubble discover?
The universe is expanding.
What did planets form from?
Stardust
What do stars form from?
Stardust and gases collected by gravity.
What are distances in space measured in?
Light years
What is a light year?
Distance light travels in one year.
How fast does light travel per second through space?
300 000km/ sec
What radiation do stars release?
Electromagnetic radiation, which include gamma rays, X- rays, U.V, light, infra- red, microwaves and radiowaves.
What does nuclear fusion in the star’s core do?
Converts hydrogen fuel into helium and heavier elements.
What surface temperature does a blue/ white star have?
20 000 degrees Celsuis
What surface temperature does a yellow star have?
5000 degrees Celsuis (e.g. our Sun)
What surface temperature does a red star have?
3000 degrees Celsuis
How can the elements in a star by determined?
By studying the light spectrum they give off.
Describe the life of stars.
