moss life cycle Flashcards
what is the dominant stage in the moss life cycle?
haploid gametophyte
(starting at female gametophyte) what grow from this gametophyte?
sporophytes
what do the sporangia do?
release spores
what are favorable habitats for spores of mosses to go to?
moist environments
what happens after a spore finds a favorable environment?
it germinates and produce gametophytes/protonemata
what are protonemata?
mass of green branched single cell filaments that has large SA for absorption
what happens after the protonemata/gametophytes are germinated?
they give rise to one or more buds
what do the buds produced from the protonemata contain?
an apical meristem that generates a male or female gametophore
how are the gametophores anchored?
by rhizoids
what do the gametophytes form?
multiple gametangia that will eventually form gametes covered by a protective tissue
how are the gametes produced in the moss life cycle?
by mitosis (haploid -> diploid)
are the sperm produced flagellated?
yes
how to the sperm fertilize the egg?
swim through water to the egg inside of the archegonia by releasing chemical attractants
what does fertilization form?
a diploid zygote that develops into an embryo
what does the embryo give rise to?
the sporophyte generation which will form a capsule with sporangia that contain sporocytes
what happens after the sporangia is formed?
mature sporophyte will disperse spores again
describe the structure of the moss gametophyte
-point that attaches to female gametophyte is the foot (absorbs nutrients)
-seta = stalk (conducts material to capsule)
-capsule contains sporangia (produces spores via meiosis)
