Q

What is a strength and weakness of using repeated measures design?

A

One strength is that there are no individual differences which makes the results more reliable as you are able to get more consistent results

One weakness is that there may be order effects which may interfere with the validity for the experiment because ppt’s may get better at remembering information because of practice or worse because of fatigue. Also, results are generalised.

Q

What were the controls of the apparatus?

A
  1. 60 decibels above hearing threshold
  2. Male speaker only
  3. Made sure each ppt was hearing the same message

Q

What was the general procedure of the experiment?

A

Ppt’s were instructed to shadow one message while another message was played on the other ear.
The aim was to see what breaks the inattentional barrier.

Q

Results: Experiment 1

What was the mean number of words recognised that was presented for the first time in the recognition test?

A

2.6 out of 7

17
Q

Results: Experiment 2

What is the ratio of number of times presented : number of times heard for affective cues?

A

39:20

18
Q

Results: Experiment 2

What is the ratio of number of times presented : number of times heard for non affective cues?

A

36 : 4

19
Q

What is the conclusion for experiment 2?

A

The affective cue I.e ‘name’ is able to break the inattentional barrier

20
Q

What type of design is used in experiment 3?

A

Independent measures design

21
Q

What is a strength and weakness of using independent measures design?

A

An advantage is that there are no order effects because ppt’s only take part in one condition. This increases the validity of the experiment as ppt’s can not get better through practice or worse through fatigue.

A disadvantage is that there are individual differences which may interfere with the validity of the experiment as you are unsure that the IV is definitely causing the DV

22
Q

How many people took part in experiment 3?

A

28

23
Q

What was the IV of experiment 3?

A

The IV was whether they were told to listen out for digits or not

24
Q

What was differences about the results of experiment 3, compared to Experiment 1 and 2?

A

The results in experiment 3 showed no difference in the mean scores or digits recalled
