Moray Flashcards
What was the first aim of Moray?
To see if there’s an inattentional barrier
What was the second aim of the Moray experiment?
To see if affective cue’s break that inattentional barrier
What is the third aim of Moray?
To see if neutral cues break the inattentional barrier
What type of sample was used?
Opportunity sample as they were all undergraduate students
What type of design was used?
Repeated measures design
What is a strength and weakness of using repeated measures design?
One strength is that there are no individual differences which makes the results more reliable as you are able to get more consistent results
One weakness is that there may be order effects which may interfere with the validity for the experiment because ppt’s may get better at remembering information because of practice or worse because of fatigue. Also, results are generalised.
What were the controls of the apparatus?
- 60 decibels above hearing threshold
- Male speaker only
- Made sure each ppt was hearing the same message
What was the general procedure of the experiment?
Ppt’s were instructed to shadow one message while another message was played on the other ear.
The aim was to see what breaks the inattentional barrier.
What was the conclusion of experiment 1?
Experiment 1 suggested that there is an inattentional barrier to processing information
What was the rejected message in experiment 1?
The word list
What was the IV of experiment 1?
Shadowed message
Rejected message
How many ppt’s took part in experiment 2?
12
What was the IV of experiment 2?
Passage containing affective cue
Passage not containing affective cue
Results: Experiment 1
What was the mean number of words recognised in the shadowed message?
4.9 out of 7
Results: Experiment 1
What was the mean number of words recognised in the rejected message?
1.9 out of 7
