Grant Flashcards
What is the aim of Grant?
It was to investigate context-dependency memory effects on both recall and recognition
What is context dependency?
Context dependency is when the to-be remembered information is better when tested in the same context in which the material is learned
When does context dependency exist?
When using unrelating words (meaningless)
When there is only recall
What was the sample of Grant?
8 Psychology students acted as experimenters and recruited 5 acquaintances each.
Data was collected from 39 students and the students were aged 17-56
What was the method of Grant?
Lab experiment
What was the salient material used in the Grant study?
An article on psycho neurology
How man questions were in the recognition test?
16
How many questions were in the recall test?
10
Why was the recall test done before the recognition?
So ppt’s used their memory beforehand and not remember from the recognition test
What was the IV of the experiment?
Matching or non-matching conditions
What was the DV of this experiment?
The score on the recognition and recall test
What were he instructions for this experiment?
You are given 2 minutes to highlight and underline any important information and complete the test given
What were the controls of the Grant experiment?
They were all given the same material
They all wore headphones
They all had the same order of tests (recall then recognition)
The test and study conditions were varied to ensure that noise doesn’t interfere memory
What design was used in this experiment?
Independent measures design
What were the results for the recall test in the silent-silent condition?
6.7
What were the results for the recall test in the silent-noisy condition?
5.4
What were the results for the recall test in the noisy-noisy condition?
6.2
What were the results for the recall test in the noisy-silent condition?
4.6
What was the finding for the results of the recall test?
Students in the matching conditions scored higher in the recall test than this in the non-matching condition
What were the results for the recognition test in the silent-silent condition?
14.3
What were the results for the recognition test in the silent-noisy condition?
12.7
What were the results for the recognition test in the noisy-silent condition?
12.7
What were the results for the recognition test in the noisy-noisy condition?
14.3
What was the finding for the results of the recall test?
Students in the matching conditions scored higher in the recognition test than those in non-matching conditions
What conclusion can you draw from this experiment?
By learning new and meaningful material in the same environment (matching conditions) this enhances performance with recognition and recall memory.
Why is the conclusion for Grant different to previous research?
Previously, researchers thought that context dependency only occurred with recall and meaningless material
