consider lifetime meds after 3 episodes
Sleep changes in depression?
less stage 3-4 sleep
shortened REM latency (get there quicker)

Bipolar I criteria?
manic episode not explained by meds or other condition.
Bipolar II disorder criteria?
major depressive episode and hypomania
What is hypomania?
4 days of elevated, expansive, irritable mood
and
abnormal increased activity or energy
Suicide risk in bipolar?
15x higher than gen pop
Persistent Depressive Disorder criteria?
depressive symptoms on most days for at least 2 years
Double depression criteria?
acute MDD episode overlying persistent depressive disorder
Cyclothymia criteria?
periods of hypomania and depressive symptoms for 2 years
Bipolar-NOS criteria?
very rapid alteration between manic and depressive symptoms that do not meet time thresholds for bipolar diagnosis
What is seasonal affective disorder?
depressive symptoms, sometimes with hypomania, that correlates with seasons (winter - spring)
Atypical depression differences from MDD?
mood reactivity (periods of improved mood)
hypersomnia, hyperphagia
leaden paralysis
interpersonal rejection sensitivity
Atypical depression tx?
SSRI and CBT
MAOI is 2nd line
Postpartum depression criteria?
MDD symptoms within one month of delivery (before or after)
