The type of disorder characterized by disturbances of mood that affects daily functioning.
Mood Disorder
Milder form of chronic depression; Associated with impaired functioning in social and occupational roles; Disorder wherein person feels sad and down.
Dysthymia
Severe mood swings from extreme elation and hyperactivity to major depression.
Bipolar Disorder
Tend to be overly excited and may strike others as acting silly or ridiculous, by cracking jokes too unrealistic. “Limitless Energy”
Manic Episode
Too tired to get out of bed and full of self-loathing and hopelessness.
Depressive Episode
Involves a chronic, cyclical pattern of mood disturbance characterized by mild mood swings of at least two years duration.
Cyclothymia
Helping depressed individuals uncover and work through ambivalent feelings toward the lost object or thing.
Psychodynamic Treatment
Focuses on helping depressed individuals become aware of their true feelings and need for self-actualization and personal fulfillment.
Humanistic Approach
Helping depressed individuals increase the rates of pleasant and meaningful activities in which they participate.
Learning Theory Approach
helping depressed individuals identify and correct distorted and dysfunctional thoughts and learn more adaptive behaviors.
Cognitive Approach
Use of appropriate drugs and other biological treatments, such as ECT.
