Monatomic Elemys & LDF Flashcards
What type of elements are noble gases
And why are they stable
Noble gases exist as monoatomic elements meaning they exist as single atoms
This is due to them having full outer electron shells making them very stable
Noble gases don’t form chemical bonds so what do they do?
Turn into liquid and solids at low temperature are there are weak forces of attraction holding atoms together known as LDF
What can happen to the electron distribution
At anytime the electron distribution in atoms may be such that one side is slightly negative and one side is slight positively charged
What does unequal distribution lead to
A temporary dipoles being created
What does unequal distribution lead to
A temporary dipoles being created
Explain the process of induced dipoles
The end of the - atom will repel the end of the electrons on the -e on the adjacent atoms
Causing temporary dipoles called indiced dipoles
What’s attracted to what
The + end of a dipole on one atom is attracted to the - end of a dipole on a nearby atoms
What do the more electrons means
The strength of LDF between atoms is proportional to the no of e
The more e the more stronger LDF
This means an increase in the melting and boiling point of noble gases as you descend end a group
