Covalent Bonding Flashcards
When does CB occur
And what is it
Between non metals
CB is the electrostatic attraction of positively
charged non metal nuclei for a Shiared pair of electrons
There are 2 types
Polar and non polar
Why do different polarities occur
Because of the elements having different electronegativity values
What are non polar
•They occurs between non metal atoms
With the SAME E.N values
•NP have LDF as their intermolecular forces the same as CN & ME
Eg: 2.2 H-H 2.2 this means they are shared equally!
Polar bonds
Occur between non metals with SLIGHTLY negative en values
this means E aren’t shared equally
The atoms with the higher En values has stronger attraction for the shared pair of e so the e sit closer
Remember this rule
The difference in electronegativity pulling the shaired pair of e closer to one toms causes the atoms to be charged slightly
The more EN element becomes slightly negatively charged due to the presence of shaired pair of e .
What else determines if somethings probably polar

What’s HYDROGEN BONDING
Usually strong PDPDI that occur between highly polar molecules
