Metaliic Bonding Flashcards
What type of elements contain metallic bonding?
Metals
Are the bonds strong or weak
Strong
What’s the structure of MB
(Definition)
Metallic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between the positive ions and the sea of the delocalised electrons
Melting & boiling points
High, due to the large amount of energy needed to break the strong metallic bonds except mercury
Ruling of nuclear charge across
Across a period the nuclear charge increases causing the electrons to become strongly attracted to the nucleus. This means more energy is required to break theses attractions hence the higher melting and boiling points.
Down a group
Shells increases meaning the outer electrons are further away from the nucleus therefore less strongly attracted. These weaker attractions require less energy to be broken hence the decrease in melting and boiling points
