angle and ramus of mandible
masseter - actions
ELEVATE TMJ
may assist to PROTRACT TMJ
masseter palpation
ask client to clench and relax jaw

temporalis - actions
ELEVATE TMJ
RETRACT TMJ
temporalis - palpation
Palpate approx inch above the zygomatic arch and have client clench and relax jaw to locate the insertion site, have client open mouth wide
lateral pterygoid - innervation
trigeminal nerve (CN V)
lateral pterygoid - origin
Superior head:
infratemporal surface and crest of greater wing of sphenoid
Inferior head:
lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid
lateral pterygoid - insertion
articular disc and capsule of TMJ,
neck of mandible
lateral pterygoid - actions
Unilaterally:
LATERALLY DEVIATE the TMJ to the OPPOSITE side
Bilaterally:
PROTRACT the TMJ
lateral pterygoid - palpation
with gloved hand: position palpating finger inside the mouth between the cheek and teeth along external surface of top teeth to back molars. press posteriorly and superiorly, have client protract or contralaterally DEVIATE the jaw
medial pterygoid - innervation
trigeminal nerve (CN V)
medial pterygoid - origin
medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid,
tuberosity of maxilla
medial pterygoid - insertion
medial surface of ramus of the mandible
medial pterygoid - actions
Unilaterally:
LATERALY DEVIATE the TMJ to the OPPOSITE side
Bilaterally:
ELEVATE the TMJ
PROTRACT the TMJ
medial pterygoid - palpation
curl fingers around inside surface of the mandible, have client clench teeth and relax
inferior attachment can be palpated with gloved finger inside mouth - a long lower teeth to back molars and press posterolaterally
