Module 9 Flashcards
What are signaling molecules?
they include NT’s, neuropeptides, and others.
Neurotransmitters are not diffusely distributed throughout the brain. Instead…
they have localized circuits.
A typical neuron will produce or release…
only one neurotransmitter.
A neuron may also manufacture and release a…
neuropeptide.
What are the five categories of signaling molecules?
small molecule transmitters, neuropeptides (larger), lipid signaling molecules, nucleosides and soluble gases.
What is psychosis?
defined by presence of abnormalities in structure and content of human thought.
Idea of reference…
is a common for of illogical thought in schizophrenia.
bizarre content can take…
paranoid form, can be grandiose, childlike qualities.
What disorders can produce psychosis?
schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, drug use.
what is a delusion?
a fixed, false belief that tends to be bizarre.
Describe the dopaminergic hypothesis of schizophrenia?
because a medicine reduced dopamine and delusions, it was decided that a lack of dopamine causes schizophrenia. It helps with positive symptoms, but not negative symptoms (reducing or absent of something that should be there.) Ex: poverty of thought. (mind is not generating thought.) loss of affect. (don’t show emotion, don’t display sadness.) More than just problems with dopamine symptoms.
No drug that is disease modifying in psychotherapy. Instead, they are…
symptom modifying.
addiction is characterized by….
tolerance and withdrawal.
