module 7 structure of matter chemistry Flashcards
matter
is anything that takes up space and has mass.
sub-atoms
neutron proton (inside the nucleus) electron
valence electrons
the electrons that occupy the outermost regions those farthest from the nucleus.
element
substance that is composed of a single type of atom
compound
a chemical that contains at least two different types of atoms in a fixed ratio.
chemical bonds
attractive forces that hold atoms together
organic compoud
compound that contains carbon and hydrogen.oxygen sulfur and nitrogen
pure substance
a chemical that contains only one type of element or compound
mixture
contains two or more elements or compounds and the ratio of atoms may vary.
states of matter
solid, iquid, gases
compound
contains two or more different atoms in a fixed ratio.
solids
have the least atomic or molecular motion, little movement, the particles vibrate
liquid
has more atomic and molecular movement, the particles slide pass and over each other.
fixed volume but no fixed shape
gas
the most atomic and molecular movement ,it does not have fixed shape or volume.
energy absorcion
releasing energy= cool down
absorbing energy= heat up
