Q

1.troposphere

A

It is the densest layer and contains about 75% to 80% of the mass of the atmosphere. Air is in a constant motion in the troposphere. It is in this layer that weather occurs.

2.stratosphere

A

The stratosphere contains the ozone layer that protects us from harmful sun radiation. This layer is very stable, which is why airplanes fly at this altitude.

3.mesosphere

A

This is the part of the atmosphere where meteors burn up, leaving visible fiery streaks in the sky.

4.thermosphere

A

This is the part where the polar lights, or auroras, happen. Also, the International Space Station orbits Earth in this layer.

where the atmosphere thins out and merges with outer space.

Q

humidity and air`

A

Air pressure decreases with temperature and humidity, so a warm, moist air mass will have a lower pressure than a cold, dry air mass.
(easier to breath in warm moist weather than in the cold mountains)

Q

convection cells

A

is a circulation pattern that forms when the riding of warm air is balanced by the sining of cool air.

transpiration

A

is a type of evaporation in which plants take up groundwater and release it into the air as water vapor.

16
Q

runoff

A

rain etc, that is not soaked up by the ground.
- it goes into lakes, oceans, streams
and it evaporates from there.

17
Q

air mass

A

a large volume of warm or cool air that has approximately uniform temperature, humidity and pressure over hundreds or thousands of miles horizontally

18
Q

greenhouse effect

A

sunlight strikes the earth and its absorbed by ground clouds and re-emitted as infrared radiation. CO2 and other gases in the atmosphere absorb the infrared and keep the earth warm

19
Q

pressure systems

A

high pressure systems-good weather

low pressure systems- cause bad weather (cyclonic)

20
Q

air pressure

A

the higher you go up, the less pressure there is.
top of mountains =low pressure.

low valley=high pressure
