module 3- force and motion Flashcards
speed
describes how fast an object is moving.
- this is equal to distance traveled divided by the time needed to cover that distance. ex (m/s; mi/hr.)
velocity
speed and direction. in physics velocity tells you how fast and in what direction something is moving
acceleration
a change in the objects velocity
- when acceleration is in the same direction as velocity, speed increases.
- when acceleration is in the opposite direction from velocity speed decreases.
Force
a push or pull
- measured by newtons (N)
- to calculate forces yo either add the forces going the same direction or subtract the forces going in opposite.
balanced forces
forces that combine to produce a net force of zero
newtons first law
the law of inercia
the tendency to keep the same motion.
until there is a change in the net force
net force
- the total force acting on an object
- the sum of forces acting together. same direction add or opposite direction subtract
Newton second law of motion
The acceleration (change)produced by the net force on an object is proportional to the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass. - force is proportional to acceleration (ex.big force=big accele.) -big mas big=big force -small mass=small force small mass=more accelerat. big mass=small acceler.
equation 2nd law of motion
acceleration=netforce/mass
or
Fnet=ma
newtons 3rd law of motion
states that whenever one object (the hand, in this case) exerts a force on a second object (the block), the second object exerts a force of the same magnitude in the opposite direction on the first object. (its a force that objects exert on each other)
