module 4- friction gravity and momentum Flashcards
friction
the force that opposes the motion of an object on which it acts.
kinetic friction
the force of friction between 2 objects that are moving against each other
static friction
occurs between 2 objects that are touching each other but not moving against each other.
the force that prevents the 2 object from starting to move.
gravity
gravity acts to pull objects closer to each other.
- gravity is an attractive force that exists between any objects with mass.
linear momentum
the mass of an object times its velocity
p=mv
the law of conservation of momentum
states that momentum is conserved when two or more object collide.
in other words momentum may be transferred from one object to another but total momentum within the group objects will stay the same.
elasticity
the amount of bounce that an object has after a collision
kinetic energy
is the energy possessed by a body due to its motion.
the faster the body moves, the greater the kinetic energy
