Module 7 Flashcards
Occupational Practice, Exposure & Procedures
Occupational Exposure
healthcare work that involves close contact with patients
Are healthcare workers still susceptible to infection
hey have lower susceptibility as they are healthy (unless they have an underlying illness)
Still susceptible to:
Respiratory disease
Blood-borne infections
Skin or wound infections
5 measures of protection in the IPC program
Health status screening
Education on safe work practices to minimise transmission
Safe system of work
Physical protection
Reporting system for compliance and identifying breaches of infection prevention and control protocol
Health Status Screening
Prior to employment
- Personal assessment (questionnaire)
- Immunisation history
- Lab and other testings
3 categories of risk
(critical, semi-critical, non-critical)
How important is the IPC
It is a legality to follow the IPC
Exposure-Prone Procedures (EPP)
invasive procedure where direct contact may be involved
this can be sharps, sharp body parts, or poorly visualised/confined areas
3 risk categories for EPP
Category 1
- Hand and fingertips always visible
- Hands and fingertips are outside the body
Category 2
- Fingertips may not be visible all the time
Category 3
- Fingertips are out of time for significant periods
- risk of injury is possible and can go unnoticed
Most Common Occupational Hazards
Percutaneous injuries (skin injuries)
Prophylaxis
treatment/action to prevent disease
