ecological model of aging
proposes that behaviour and well-being are a function of the fit between the person (competence) and the environment (environmental press)
theoretical model of residential normalcy
builds on the ecological model
places where they experience overall pleasurable, hassle free and memorable feelings that have relevance to them; and where they feel both component and in control, they do not have to behave in a personally objectionable way or to utterly surrender mastery of their lives or environments to others
aging in place
refers to the ability to stay and grow old in your own home and community
may lead to a very high proportion of older adults in some communities

can refer to both geographical space with defined boundaries or a group that has meaningful social relationships with
mobility of older adults
- Essential to facilitate aging in place, particulary in rural areas
- Older drivers casue more accidents per km driver, bc they drive less they pose a limited risk to traffic safety
- Policies to increase safety of older drivers include: regular driving/phsycial exams, use of restricted lisences and driver retaining programs
For older adults unable to drive, alternatives include: assiatnce from family, friends o volunteers; public transportation; taxis and specialized transit services
migratory patterns for older adults
- Majority choose to age in place
- Most move for health reasons, family reasons or a desire for better accomodations/lifestyle
- Interprovincial migration westwards
- Seasonal migration south to the US
- International migration to be closer to family or amenties
age friendly communities
- Developed by the WHO
In practical terms, as an age friendly city adapts its structures and services to be asseible to an dinclusive of olfer people with varrying needs and capacities
