Module 6 Respiratory Flashcards
What is the purpose and function of the Respiratory system?
Transport oxygen from air to blood and remove carbon dioxide from the blood
What does the Upper Respiratory Tract consist of?
Nasal cavity, Pharynx, and Larynx
What does the Lower Respiratory Tract consist of?
Trachea, Primary bronchi, and Lungs
Describe what happens during ventilation
Air moves from high to low pressure area.
If the atmospheric pressure is higher than pressure in alveoli what happens?
Inspiration-air moves from atmosphere into lungs
If the pressure in alveoli is higher than in the atmosphere what happens?
Expiration- air moves from lungs into atmosphere
What do Chemoreceptors detect changes in?
CO2, H+, 02 levels in blood or CSF.
Central Chempreceptors-medulla
Peripheral chemoreceptors-carotids
What are some factors that affect diffusion of gases?
Thickening of respiratory membrane: pulmonary fibrosis>narrowed airways
Fluid accumulation in alveoli
Alveolar walls destroy d/t prolonged inflammation
What does a Spirometry test evaluate?
AKA Pulmonary Function Test evaluates volumes and airflow times
What does Arterial Blood Gas tests check?
O2, CO2, Bicarbonate and Serum pH
Who is sent for Exercise Tolerance Testing?
Pts with Chronic Pulmonary Disease
What does Culture and Sensitivity test for?
Sputum testing for pathogens and Antimicrobial Sensitivity
What are some general respiratory manifestations?
Sneezing, coughing, sputum, hemopystis, breathing patterns, wheezing, stridor, breathe sounds, dyspnea, cyanosis, pleural pain, friction rub, clubbed digits
What diseases of the respiratory system are infectious?
Common cold, Influenza, Pneumonia, SARS, TB
