Module 6 Flashcards
Exam 2
How many amino acids are there?
There are over 500 amino acids
What are amino acids?
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
What must an amino acid have to be considered an amino acid?
- 4 different substituents
- carboxyl group
- a hydrogen
- amino group that possesses N
- R group
How many amino acids can be coded in the genome?
Only 20 genes can be coded in the genome
What two categories are amino acids divided into?
Essential and Nonessential amino acids
What is an essential amino acid?
Essential amino acids must be acquired from the diet
What is Transamination?
Transamination is the transfer of amine group to from one amino acid to another molecule to create an amino acid
What is a conditionally essential amino acid?
Nonessential amino acids that become essential during illness, pregnancy, trauma, etc
What are amino acids linked together by?
Amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds
What are fatty acids linked together with?
Fatty acids are linked together by ester bonds
What is N-terminus?
Beginning of a protein or polypeptide chain
What is C-terminus?
The end of a protein or peptide chain
What dictates the function of a protein?
Shape dictates function!!
What is Denaturation?
When a protein’s structure is changed making the protein biologically inactive. This can happen by a heat change, enzymes, agitation, or alcohol
What is electrolysis? (breaking down via electricity)
a process that uses an electric current to cause a chemical change in a substance
