Module 5 pt 1 Flashcards
What are atoms?
The basic building blocks of matter.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What are elements?
A collection of atoms that all have the same number of protons.
Name 6 main elements and their abbreviations.
Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S).
What are molecules?
Chemicals that result from atoms linking together.
What are the two types of changes in matter?
Physical change, and chemical change.
What is physical change?
A change that affects the appearance, but not the chemical makeup of a substance.
What is a chemical change?
A change that alters the makeup of the elements or molecules of a substance.
What are 3 types of physical change?
Diffusion, osmosis, and change.
What is diffusion?
The random motion of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is osmosis?
The tendency of a solvent to travel across a semipermeable membrane into area of low concentration.
What is a semipermeable membrane?
A membrane that allows some molecules to pass through, but does not allow other molecules to pass through.
