EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CARE For Status Epilepticus
- Benzodiazepines are first line treatment
- Diazepam (0.15mg/kg) or Lorazepam (0.1mg/kg)
- Administered IV over 5 minutes
- Followed by Phenytoin or Fosphenytoin ( more
preferred)
Why should you Never mix phenytoin with 5% dextrose solution
To avoid crystal precipitation
Fosphenytoin
If Seizure continues, consider giving General anesthesia such as:
Propofol, midazolam or pentobarbital
Never give Valproate and Benzodiazepines intramuscularly T/F
