module 5 Flashcards
experimental design variables
independent and dependent
descriptive research variables
predictor
criterion
predictor variable
variable that we use as a base for prediction
criterion variable
variable that we measure to determine the amount/degree of relationship
non manipulated independent
used in quasi
no random assignment to groups
aka as participant variables
usually associated with a characteristic of a person that is not changeable
confounding variable
something that comes through and it is not controlled but it can have an effect
nominal scale
merely descriptive separates by category (color, gender, etc) with no numerical value attached
ordinal
a value that is attached (there is some relative order of lesser or greater) but there are not equal distances between points
ex: students ranked by their scores
interval
measurement system in which there are equal distances between points on the scale but there is no absolute zero
ex: IQ scores, temperature
ratio
there are equal distances between points on the scale and there is an absolute zero point
ex: weight
equal unit size
a property of measurement in which a difference of 1 is the same amount throughout the entire scale
absolute zero
a property of measurement in which assigning a score of zero indicates an absence of the variable being measured
central means of tendency
mean median mode
measures of variability
range standard deviation variance
