Module 5 Flashcards
Amino acids
Building blocks for proteins
Fats
A type of lipid composed of glycerol and saturated fatty acids, typically solid at room temp.
Monomer
A small organic molecule that may bind chemically to other molecules to form a polymer. Glucose is a mono more that makes up polysaccharide starch, and amino acids are monomers
Organic molecules
Natural process
Polysaccharide
A carbohydrate that consist of long chains of monosaccharides bonded together. Often used for energy storage.
Steroids
A type of lipid composed of a common carbon ring structure. Testosterone and cholesterol.
Biological macromolecule
Large molecules made by living organisms from smaller molecules building blocks.
Glucose
A simple carbohydrate.
Inorganic molecules
Simple molecules no found in living things
Monosaccharides
A simple sugar containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Ex: glucose, fructose, and ribose.
Phospholipid
A molecule consisting of glycerol bonded to a phosphate group and two fatty acids
Proteins
Organic macromolecules consisting of folded chains of amino acids. Enzymes are proteins, and catalyze all of the chemical reactions in the cell
Waxes
No polar lipids that form protective layers on plants and animals.
Carbohydrates
Play a role in giving a cell its identity
Lipids
Largely non-polar. Building block for hormones. Fats, oils, waxes, and steroid.
