Module 43 Terms - Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Flashcards
Genetic drift
The random change in allele frequencies from generation to generation (like if a large part of a population was suddenly eliminated). Often results from bottlenecks and founder effects
Bottleneck
When a large population is reduced to a few individuals
Founder effect
When a few individuals from a larger population establish a new population
Migration
The movement of individuals from one population to another
Gene flow
The movement of alleles from one population to another
Nonrandom mating
Individuals preferentially choose mates according to their genotypes
What are the five mechanisms of evolution?
Natural selection, genetic drift, migration, mutation, and nonrandom mating
Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium
When allele and genotype frequencies don’t change over time. There MUST be random mating, no mutation, no migration, no natural selection, and a large sample size
