Module 25 Terms - Regulation of the Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Cancer
A
A disease marked by uncontrolled cell division
2
Q
Cyclins
A
A family of proteins whose concentrations rise during mitosis and fall during interphase. Bind to and activate cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs)
3
Q
Cyclin-dependent kinases
A
Kinases whose activity depends on binding cyclins. Always present within the cell but only active when bound to a specific cyclin. These kinases allow the cell cycle to progress
4
Q
Checkpoints
A
Mechanisms that block the cyclin-CDK activity required for the next phase, pausing the cell until preparations are complete or damage is repaired
5
Q
Apoptosis
A
A process by which cells die in an orderly way with a distinct set of cellular changes
