Module 15 Terms - Photosynthesis 1: Overview Flashcards
Reduction reactions
Reactions in which a molecule gains both electrons and energy
Oxidation reactions
Reactions in which a molecule loses electrons and releases energy
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)
An electron carrier that exists in two forms: oxidized (NADP+) and reduced (NADPH).
NADP+ + 2e- + H+ –> NADPH or the other way around
e- is an electron
Oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions
A coupled reaction made up of reduction and oxidation reactions. These two always occur together
Light reactions
The first stage of photosynthesis in which energy from sunlight is converted into chemical energy
Calvin cycle
The second stage of photosynthesis in which the energy generated from light reactions is used to convert an inorganic molecule (CO2) to an organic molecule (a carbohydrate)
Photosynthetic electron transport chain
A series of redox reactions where energy from sunlight is used to power the movement of electrons
Stroma
The region surrounding the thylakoid
