Module 4 - Chapter 15 + 16 key terms Flashcards
Organohalogen compounds
Molecules that contain at least one halogen atom joined to a carbon chain, used in many pesticides. They’re rarely found in nature and as they aren’t broken down naturally in the environment they are concerning.
The Ozone layer
Found at the edge of the stratosphere, at a height that varies from about 10-40km above the earths surface.
Reflux
A method used to prepare an organic liquid without boiling off the solvent, reactants or products.
Distillation
A common method used to separate a pure liquid from its impurities usually based on their differing boiling points.
Organic synthesis
The preparation of complex molecules from simple starting materials.
Target molecule
Is used to describe the compound that the chemist is attempting to prepare by organic synthesis.
