Module 4 - chapter 14 key terms Flashcards
Alcohol
Alcohols are polar organic compounds with the -OH (hydroxyl) functional group. They are less volatile, have higher melting points and greater water solubility than their corresponding alkanes.
Primary alcohol
The -OH group is attached to a carbon that is attached to two hydrogens and one alkyl group.
Secondary alcohol
The -OH group is attached to a carbon atom that is attached to one hydrogen atom and two alkyl groups.
Tertiary alcohol
The -OH group is attached to a carbon that is attached to no hydrogen atoms and three alkyl groups
Dehydration
Dehydration is any reaction in which a water molecule is removed from the starting material. Dehydration of an alcohol is an example of an elimination reaction.
