Module 4 Aquiring A New Language Flashcards
define cognition
 How people learn
What is comprehensible input?
Comprehensible input is a language interaction that is almost completely understood by the language learner
What does meta-mean?
Meta-means the abstraction of the concept of the base word for example, meta-language would consist of the language that actually describes language such as parts of speech, prepositional, phrases, etc.
Give an example of a metacognitive skills
Strategies to encourage the retention of information, such as memory tips
Or
Class time spent on organizing notebooks to make studying simpler
What do language learners need to become successful communicators?
To be successful they need to understand, at least in a limited way what is said, and then have an environment and activities that encourage them to interact with others using language to achieve some goal
-What is metacognition?
Metacognition is thinking about thinking
What are the five areas of metacognition according to Neil J Anderson, professor of linguistics and English language at BYU
-Preparing and planning for learning,
selecting, and using learning strategies
monitoring strategy, use
orchestrating various strategies
evaluating strategy, use and learning
How do you prepare and plan for learning
Tell your students the goal of the class or the goal of the exercise or the reason for paperwork, etc.
How do you teach your student different methods of learning?
. Show them notetaking, practice, outline and chart forms, and use different colored pins
How do you monitor strategy use
Discuss with your students which note taking strategy they prefer and why
How might one orchestrate various strategies for learning vocabulary?
a learner can practice the strategy of writing all new vocabulary down, categorizing it, defining it, using it in a sentence, reading the word frequently, associating some imagery with the word, hearing it, and orally using it in context.
How can students evaluate strategies they use for learning
Students can be given quizzes based on content that was learned with a conscious strategy or through several different learning strategies and then let your students consider the outcome of the different strategies and what works best for them
Give examples for students centered, communicative tasks that encourage interaction with the language
‘Allow full opportunities for students to personalize all topics. For example, you might ask students to express their experiences or opinion around a topic so just dance before you read a passage about dance
1 encourage pair work and small group work,
design structures that support students during tasks. For example, mini beginners have difficulty sustaining conversations so providing conversation prompts might be helpful develop lesson sequences that move from teacher centered tasks. Tamara restricted activities to more independent and interactive ones
and provide teacher feedback on both the Contant and linguistic accuracy of the student to student work.
Describe the lesson sequence called test teach test
In the method test, teach test, the teacher informally test students to see what they know and don’t know then focus is her lesson only on the unknown words or concepts she might lead a brief oral drill to develop the pronunciation of new vocabulary words, and elicit or provide their spelling and syllable stress That’s a teacher centered step as a vocabulary check she could provide paint swatches and ask students to drill each other in pairs and the names of colors. This would be a student student restricted response. Finally students could be asked to work in groups of three and decide which color should be featured in the next window display at a local departments store. The last activity is more interactive and independent.
Give an example of providing teacher feedback on the Contant and linguistic accuracy of the student student work
‘A teacher might make notes after listening carefully to what was said, then respond to the ideas expressed by the students linguistic feedback would be on the accuracy of the meaning technology, or forming the target language such as I’m still hearing people pronounce fuchsia with three syllables. It’s only two fuchsia repeat after me a fuchsia blouse.
