What is the great vowel shift and when did it begin?

A

The great vowel shift began around the 1400s with the pronunciation of bowel sounds moving to the front of the mouth. For example, sheep had been pronounced like shape. And meat pronounced like mate. The letter E at the end of words became silent, and the guttural German GH became our current knight in the initial K, and a cayenne combination became silent as well.

Who is William Caxton?

A

‘William Caxton is credited with bringing over the first printing press. He was very successful with book sales, and his books were widely read text and began the process of standardizing the spelling words, but since the words were still changing by the time they were printed mini were already updated. One result of this is that the spellings did not match the pronunciation just 100 years later by Shakespeare’s time.
