Module 4 Flashcards
Correlation
What is correlation?
A relationship between data
What is a Pearson correlation?
a correlation that is used to find a linear relationship between two variables
What kind of variables are looked at for correlation?
Ratio or interval
What is a Pearson correlation represented by?
r
What is the range for r?
-1 to 1
True or False?
The 0.8 is a stronger correlation than 0.5.
True, the closer the value is to 1 or -1 the stronger the correlation
What does it mean if the correlation is 1 or -1?
The two variables have a perfect relationship
When are weaker correlations acceptable?
With psychological variables
When do we typically see stronger correlations?
With physical variables
What is the range of a strong correlation?
±0.7 to ± 1
What is the range of a moderate correlation?
± 0.5 to ± 0.69
What is the range of a weak correlation?
± 0.4 to ± 0.49
What is a positive correlation?
The variables are moving in the same direction
What is a negative correlation?
The variables are moving in opposite directions
What does it mean if your variables make a “blob” on a scatterplot
There is little or no correlation/relationship
How can we make a correlation meaningful?
Using r²
What does r² do?
When you square r it gives you a variability percent.
Ex: squaring 0.74 gives you 55%
55% of the reason people differ in one variable is because they differ in another variable
True or False?
Correlation means causation.
False, correlation DOES NOT mean causation.
What is magnitude?
How close together the points are/ how strong the correlation is.
What is direction?
Direction is if the graph is positive (going up to the right) or negative (going down to the right)
