Module 3C Flashcards
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose.
The energy produced from respiration can not be used directly. What is it turned into?
ATP
What is ATP?
It is the energy source for many life processes and it transports energy to where it needs to be in the body.
What life processes does ATP aid?
1) Muscle contraction
2) Protein synthesis
3) Body temperature regulation
When does aerobic respiration take place?
When there is a plentiful supply of oxygen.
Give the word equation for aerobic respiration.
Glucose + Oxygen — Carbon Dioxide + Water
What increases when the rate of respiration increases?
Oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production.
Why will temperature and pH affect the respiration rate?
It is an enzyme catalysed reaction.
What type of respiration occurs when you do hard exercise?
Anaerobic respiration.
Why does anaerobic respiration occur during hard exercise?
Your body can not supply enough oxygen to your muscles so they begin to respire anaerobically so you can still use them.
When respiration with little supply of oxygen takes place, glucose is…
Partially broken down.
What is produced in anaerobic respiration ?
Lactic acid
Why is a build up of lactic acid bad?
Causes pain and muscle fatigue
When you stop your hard exercise you will have what?
An oxygen debt.
How do you repay your oxygen debt?
Panting hard will help replace the oxygen and allow for aerobic respiration to begin again.
