Module 1H Flashcards
Where are chromosomes held?
In the nucleus.
How are the chromosomes presented in most body cells?
In matched pairs.
How are the number of chromosomes in the gametes different to the number in the body cells?
They are half.
What are alleles?
Different versions of the same gene.
What chromosome pair will a male have?
XY
What chromosome pair will a female have?
XX
What are dominant alleles?
Dominant alleles are the ones expressed when present.
What are recessive alleles?
Recessive alleles are those expressed when the dominant allele is absent.
Define the term homozygous?
Two identical alleles.
Define the term heterozygous?
Two different alleles.
Define the term genotype.
Your genetic make up.
Define the term phenotype.
Any characteristics that are expressed.
What are the causes of genetic variation?
Mutation
Gamete formation
Fertilisation
How are inherited disorders caused?
Faulty alleles - usually recessive.
