Module 3 - Nervous System HW Flashcards
What are the components of the CNS?
The components of the CNS are the Brain and Spinal cord.
What are the components of the PNS?
The components of the PNS are the nerves outside the CNS.
What do neurons generate?
Neurons generate action potentials (electrical impulse).
What is the function of neuroglial cells?
Neuroglial cells support and protect neurons.
Which cells form the myelin sheath?
Schwann cells form myelin sheaths in PNS.
What disease develops if the myelin sheath is progressively damaged? What are some symptoms of the disease?
Multiple Sclerosis develops if the myelin sheath is progressively damaged. Some symptoms include weakness, visual impairment, and incontinence.
What is a nerve?
A nerve carries information to and from the CNS. A nerve contains axons of many neurons wrapped together in a protective sheath.
How many cranial nerves do we have?
We have 12 pairs of cranial nerves.
Name and describe each of the 4 lobes of the brain
One lobe of the brain is the occipital lobe. This lobe is responsible for processing visual information. The second lobe is the Temporal lobe. This lobe is responsible for processing auditory information and spoken/written language. The third lobe is the Parietal lobe. This lobe is responsible for processing sensory information from the skin. The fourth lobe is the Frontal lobe. This lobe is responsible for processing motor activity, speech, and conscious thought.
Describe Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is an accumulation of abnormal protein, beta amyloid. It causes progressive memory lapses and dementia. Parkinsons disease is a progressive degenerative disorder affected motor activity due to loss of dopamine-releasing neurons.
