What do ethics focus on?
Ethics focus on the profession.
What are ethics?
Standards of right and wrong in a professional or legal context.
What do morals focus on?
Morals focus on the individual.
What are morals?
An individual’s guiding principles and personal values that influence their notion of right and wrong.
What are examples of ethical breaches?
- Inappropriate relationships
- Violations of clearly stated rules and procedures
- Failing to perform duties
- Imposing personal views unrelated to subject of lesson
- Emotional or psychological harassment
- Invading privacy
- Accepting gifts or favors
- Deceiving/lying
What are conflicts of interest?
- Taking advantage of confidential info learned on the job for your own benefit
- Dating or having a romantic relationship with a subordinate/supervisor
- Starting a company that provides similar services to your full-time employer
- Hiring an unqualified relative
- Not disclosing you are related to a candidate when you’re on the hiring committee
- Doing business/work for a competitor
- Excess compensation
- Dealing with pharmaceutical ‘detailers’
- Medical research
What is a Conscious Clause?
Conscientious objection in health care is the refusal to perform a legal role or responsibility because of moral or other personal beliefs.
What is autonomy?
Right of the individual to make his or her own decision.
What is beneficence?
Acting with the best interest of the patient in mind.
What is non-maleficence?
Do no harm.
What is justice in ethics?
Emphasis on fairness and equality among individuals.
How do we determine a person’s decision-making ability?
- Do we think he/she will follow through with the decision?
- Does the person understand the situation, consequences, and implications of various options?
- Is the person being negatively influenced?
