Ballottment
Rebound of the fetus when the cervix is tapped during vaginal examination
Chadwick’s sign
Bluish,purplish discoloration of the cervix, vagina, and labia during pregnancy as a result of increased vascular congestion.
Chloasma
area’s of pigmentation (hyperpigmentation) include brownish pathches over the forehead, cheeks, and nose. (also called melasma or the mask of pregnancy)
EDB- Estimated date of birth
Estimate of the date a woman will give birth.
EDC- estimated date of confinement
similar to EDD and EDB
Effleurage
Self-massage of the abdomen or other body part during labor contractions.
Engagement
Descent of the widest diameter of the fetal presenting part to at least a zero station (level of the ischial spines in the maternal pelvis
Fetoscope
Used to enhance conduction of faint fetal heart sounds. Rarely used in the US
Gestation
Length (from conception) of the preganancy
Gestational age
Prenatal age of the developing baby (measured in weeks) calculated from the first day of the woman’s last menstrual period. Also called Menstrual age, about two weeks longer then the fertilization age.
Goodell’s sign
Softening of the cervix during pregnancy
Gravids
refers to a woman who is, or has been pregnant regardless of the duration of the pregnancy
Hegar’s sign
Softening pf the lower uterine segment at 6-8 weeks of pregnancy.
Leopolds maneuver
Provides a systematic method for palpating the fetus through the abdominal wall during the latter part of pregnancy. These maneuvers provide valuable info about the location and presentation of the fetus.
Lightening
Decent of the fetus toward the pelvic inlet before labor.
Linea nigra
The linea alba (the line that marks the longitudinal division of the midline of the abdomen) darkens and becomes the linea nigra. Nipples, aereola, and preexsisting moles also darken.
Multigravida
A woman who has been pregnant more then once
Multipara
A woman who has delivered 2 or more pregnancies at 20 or more weeks of gestation
Nulliparra
A woman who has never completed a preganancy beyons 20 weeks of gestation.
Para
of pregnancies that have progressed to 20 or more weeks at delivery, whether the fetus was born alive or stillborn. Refers to the # or pregnancies, not the # of fetus’s.
Postpartum
Refers to the first 6 weeks after childbirth.
Primagravida
A woman who is pregnant for the first time.
Primapara
A woman who has delivered one pregnancy of at least 20 weeks.
Quickening
The first movements of the fetus felt by the mother.
Striae Gravidarum
Irregular pink to purple streaks on the abdomen. breasts or buttocks resulting from tears int he connective tissue. ( Stretch marks)
