The person behind it was Joseph Stalin but the countries were East Germany, Poland, the Soviet Union, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia.
What was the alliance the Soviet Union created in response to NATO?
The Warsaw Pact between Eastern Europeans and the Soviets.
What two groups fought in the Chinese Civil War?
The communist and nationalists.
What was the US justification for their interventionist foreign policy during the Cold War? (another way to ask this is: What theory motivated the US to get involved in Vietnam and Korea)
The domino theory which said that if one country fell under the influence of Communism, the surrounding countries would inevitably follow.
What are “third world” countries
Usually developing nations, they were not aligned with either world superpower.
When did China get involved with the Korean War?
In October 1950 when the United States pushed the North Koreans to the Chinese border.
Why did the Soviet Union blockade West Berlin (note - this isn’t the Berlin Wall!)
The Soviets did not like how the allies formed one country and stopped land and water traffic into Berlin, which was not a communist area, but happened to be on the communist side.
What major Soviet event led to increased US spending on education and technology?
When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1.
What economic system did China use after their Civil War
They used communism after their civil war.
Who were the Vietcong
Vietcong were communist guerillas in Vietnam.
Why did the US shift from brinkmanship to détente? (what event happened that changed our countries views)
Detente replaced brinkmanship after the Vietnam war when the United States needed to focus more on their internal wounds. Tensions decreased between the U.S. and Soviet Union when detente was formed.
What are the CIS? (note - I’m not asking what CIS stands for. Describe what it was)
Commonwealth of Independent States, is a free association of sovereign states that was formed in 1991 by Russia and 11 other republics that were formerly part of the Soviet Union.
